"Academic painting" can refer to:

  • Yuantihua - the official style of the Chinese court and Chinese Imperial Painting Academy
  • Academic painting (France) - the dominant style of painting in late 19th century Europe, which many Japanese artists studied in the Meiji period. Emphasizing realism, naturalism, and masterful skill and technique, it was this style against which the Impressionists and other Modernist artists rebelled at that time.
