Huayan Buddhism was a sect, or school, of Buddhism which emerged during the Tang Dynasty of Chinese history. Among its greatest masters was Fazang (643-712). The sect emphasized a dichotomy between formless principle, called li, and visible or manifest phenomena, known as shi.
