On 1867/12/9, the 15-year-old Meiji Emperor issued a formal edict (dai-gô-rei) declaring the restoration (fukko) of Imperial rule (ôsei).

Battles continued to rage, however, between opponents of the Tokugawa shogunate and its supporters, for much of the rest of the year. In addition, the emperor's formal coronation did not take place until 8/27.
