Takahashi Yuichi was a pioneer of Western-style oil painting, or yôga.

Among his most famous works are a portrait of the Meiji Emperor completed in 1880,[1] and a still life of a salmon on a wooden board (both painted on canvas); he is known for his exceptional realism.
