- Qing Imperial Court mandates Chinese and Chinese subjects to wear their hair in a queue (a long braid), in the Manchu style. Ryukyuans are excused from this mandate.
- Tenshu of Matsuyama castle (Iyo) is completed.
- Ban on onna-kabuki is reissued.
