Yoritomo was born the third son of Minamoto Yoshitomo.
In 1159, Yoshitomo and his sons became involved the Heiji Rebellion, but they were defeated by Taira Kiyomori and were forced to leave Kyoto. On the way to the Eastern regions, Yoritomo strayed from them and was captured in Mino.
