  • Japanese or Miyako: 親元祖・うやがん (uyagan/uyaan)

Uyagan are ancestral spirits worshipped in the Karimata region of Miyako Island. On certain festival occasions, the spirits are said to come out from hiding in the mountains, and the people welcome them by dancing in a circle and singing a song of the gods (fusa), while wearing grass headdresses (uika) and holding grasses in their hands.
