Sadoyama Anken

Jump to navigationJump to searchSadoyama Anken, also known by his Chinese-style name Mao Changxi, was a Ryukyuan court painter. Named to that post at the age of 20, he is known for his ogoe (formal posthumous royal portraits) of King Shô Iku and of a number of earlier kings of the kingdom,[1] and also for an 1843 painting of a rooster.
After the fall of the kingdom, Anken came to work for the industrial division of the Okinawa prefecture government, producing maps and technical drawings.[2]
In 1884, his grandson Sadoyama Anhô submitted a number of works to the Second National Painting Exposition.[2]
