Niiro Nagazumi was a son of [[Niiro Yasuhisa]]. He entered the priesthood and adopted the name Ryoan, traveling as far as Kyoto at the age of 16 in his pursuit of learning. In [[1587]] he returned to secular life at the order of [[Shimazu Yoshihisa]] and served [[Shimazu Yoshihiro|Yoshihiro]] in the [[Korean Campaigns]] and at the [[Battle of Sekigahara]].
