Machida Sanetsumi was the younger brother of Machida Hisanari, and accompanied his brother and 17 other young men from Satsuma han in sneaking out of the country in 1865 to study in Europe. He was 19 at the time.
Sanetsumi returned to Japan the following year, in the 8th month.
