Shigetaka was a nephew of [[Shimazu Yoshihisa]] and the son of [[Shimazu Yoshitora]]. He was adopted into first the [[Ei clan]], then the [[Iriki-In clan|Iriki-In]], where he succeeded [[Iriki-in Shigetoki]], who died without an heir at [[Battle of Sekigahara|Sekigahara]] ([[1600]]). In [[1613]] he was transferred from Yuno-o to Iriki-in.
