The Hanlin Academy refers to the scholar-officials in service to the Chinese Imperial court.
The Academy was first established in [[738]] by [[Emperor Xuanzong of Tang|Emperor Xuanzong]] of the [[Tang Dynasty]],<ref>"[http://www.aisf.or.jp/~jaanus/deta/i/intaiga.htm Intaiga]," JAANUS, 2001.</ref> and remained dominant in the [[Song Dynasty|Song]], [[Ming Dynasty|Ming]], and [[Qing Dynasty|Qing Dynasties]].
Scholars were appointed to the Academy through the [[Chinese imperial examinations]] system.
