Great Tenmei Fire

The Great Tenmei Fire was a fire which broke out in the Kyoto Imperial Palace on 1788/1/29 and grew to engulf roughly 90% of the city.[1]

Not only a great many homes and shops, but also Nijô castle and many Buddhist temples, Shinto shrines, and other significant sites suffered severe damage in this fire. Still today a great many buildings at temples, shrines, and other historical sites in the city date from the subsequent rebuilding after this fire.
