The Goto of [[Omi province|Ômi]] at first served the [[Rokkaku clan|Rokkaku]], for whom they were important retainers. In [[1563]] [[Goto Takaharu]] was executed by the Rokkaku and this touched off a period of civil strife within the Rokkaku domain. Alienated, they willingly allied with [[Oda Nobunaga]] in [[1568]].
