Giovanni Battista Sidotti was the last Christian missionary to enter Japan during the Tokugawa period, prior to Bakumatsu.

He entered Japan in 1708, and was interrogated by Arai Hakuseki; he then remained imprisoned by the shogunate for the next six years, dying in his cell in 1714.
