- 1840/7 Representatives of the Dutch East India Company arrive at Nagasaki and inform of the outbreak of the Opium War.
- 1840/9 Takashima Shûhan offers a proposal to the shogunate on the production and use of artillery.
- 1840/11 Sanbôryôchigae - The daimyo of Shonai han (Dewa province), Kawagoe han (Musashi province), and Nagaoka han (Echigo province) are moved to one another's territories.
