Gusuku site (Kikaijima)

The Gusuku site is an archaeological site on the island of Kikaijima.

Scholars divide periods of notable activity at the site into three periods. From the 9th to 11th centuries, the residents of the Gusuku site seem to have been rather interconnected with communities in "mainland" Japan. In the 11th-12th centuries, the site seems to have come under the strong influence of powerholders based in southern Kyushu. However, in the 13th-15th century layers of the archaeological finds, objects from Kyushu become far less numerous; interconnection with, or influence from, Kyushu is believed to have become notably lessened.
