Toyuso

The Tôyûsô is a three-volume compilation of Chinese poems (kanshi) composed by members of the 1842 Ryukyuan embassy to Edo. It was published in a widely-accessible woodblock-printed form and sold across Japan the following year.

The first volume features poems by gieisei (head musician) Tei Gen'i, the second volume poems by musician Gi Gakuken, and the third volume poems by lead ambassador Urasoe Chôki (aka Shô Genro). Many of the poems relate to sights and experiences along the Ryukyuans' journey, not only in Edo, but in port towns and post-stations all along the route.
