- Emperor Kôkaku abdicates in favor of his son, who takes the throne as Emperor Ninkô.
- Titia Blumhoff, the wife of Dutch factor Jan Cock Blumhoff, arrives in Japan. Along with their child's wet-nurse, and Blumhoff's sister-in-law, they are the first three non-East Asian women to enter Japan since 1661.
- Kôrin manga is published on the 100th anniversary of the death of Ogata Kôrin.
