- The Chinese Imperial Court forces all Buddhist monks and nuns (with a very few exceptions) to return to lay life, and thus to start paying taxes. This was the culmination of a series of anti-Buddhist steps taken by the Tang Court, as part of efforts to increase the Court's revenues.
