Oyashirazu-koshirazu (lit. "parents don't know, children don't know"), often translated as "Every Man for Himself," was a particularly dangerous stretch of land on the Sea of Japan coast (in modern-day Niigata prefecture) encountered by many travelers. On this half-a-mile stretch of land, travelers were hemmed in by the sea on one side, and steep mountains on the other side, and were at risk of being blown off the path and into the sea if there was a particularly strong wind.
