Emperor Zhongzong was the son of [[Emperor Gaozong]] and [[Empress Wu]]. He ruled briefly in [[683]]-[[684]] before being forced to abdicate in favor of his brother [[Emperor Ruizong]]. Zhongzong then regained the throne after overthrowing Empress Wu in a coup in [[705]]. Her supporters arranged his assassination in [[710]], and after the very brief intervening reign of [[Emperor Shang of Tang]], Ruizong took the throne once more.
