  • Japanese: 大東諸島 (Daitô shotô)

The Daitô Islands are a group of small islands in Okinawa prefecture. Located far to the south of the Ryukyu Islands that comprise the bulk of the prefecture, the Daitôs were first annexed by Japan in 1885 and appended to the prefecture.

A number of small military installations were maintained on the Daitô Islands during World War II. Though many islanders were evacuated before Allied forces attacked the islands, the islands quickly became detached from Japanese resupply, leading to starvation and other problems for those who remained.[1]
