Shôkyû was regarded as the leading master of linked verse (renga) after the death of Tani Sôboku in 1545. He accepted the famous Jôha as a pupil around 1544 and on his death bed, entrusted Jôha with the leadership of the Satomura school of renga and the care of his son Shôshitsu.
