- Japanese: 滑稽本 (kokkeibon)
Kokkeibon were a genre of humorous publications popular in the mid-to-late Edo period. Shikitei Sanba is among the more celebrated authors of such works.
Kokkeibon works generally consist of a string of loosely connected anecdotes, scenes, gags, or incidents, and do not typically have characters or plot which extend across the whole work. Further, the stories are often told largely through dialogue, with a minimum of narration. Characters are indicated by name or by descriptor, marking the beginning of each line of dialogue, and accents, dialect, slang, and varying politeness registers are used extensively to bring out the flavor or texture of each character and scene.
