The Niiro of Satsuma province were one of the principal retainer families to the Shimazu clan, and were descended from a branch of that house - specifically from Shimazu Tokihisa, son of Shimazu Tadamune.
Members of the clan included prominent Shimazu retainers on the Sengoku period battlefield, Edo period karô (House Elders) of Satsuma han, prominent Satsuma han officials stationed in the Ryûkyû Kingdom, and influential figures in Bakumatsu and Meiji period developments.
