Chiho Mashiho was a notable early scholar of the Ainu language.

An Ainu himself, Mashiho studied at Tokyo Imperial University and went on to become a significant figure in the field of Ainu Studies.

His elder sister, Chiri Yukie, similarly traveled to Tokyo, but tragically died young, at the age of 19, only months after arriving in the city.
