Yamato Nagaoka was a leading authority on the Tang legal system in the early Nara period. He was born to an assistant minister of justice and sent to China as a legal specialist on the diplomatic mission of 716. He stayed only briefly in China, returning to Japan soon after to help author the Yōrō Code compiled in 718 (Yōrō 2).
