The Niiro of [[Satsuma province]] were descended from a branch of the [[Shimazu clan|Shimazu family]], whom they served for many generations. In the Edo Period they became one of the principal Shimazu retainer families.

The Niiro of [[Satsuma province]] were one of the principal retainer families to the [[Shimazu clan]], and were descended from a branch of that house - specifically from [[Shimazu Tokihisa]], son of [[Shimazu Tadamune]].

 

Members of the clan included prominent Shimazu retainers on the [[Sengoku period]] battlefield, [[Edo period]] ''[[karo|karô]]'' (House Elders) of [[Satsuma han]], prominent Satsuma han officials stationed in the [[Ryukyu Kingdom|Ryûkyû Kingdom]], and influential figures in [[Bakumatsu]] and [[Meiji period]] developments.
