Shimazu Tadashige was the son of Shimazu Tadayoshi, last daimyô of Satsuma han.
Unlike his father Tadayoshi, who was known for retaining traditional samurai modes of dress and lifestyle for some time into the Meiji period, Tadashige had a British tutor from a young age, and adopted Western modes quite early in his life.
He attended Gakushûin Middle School. In 1911, he married Isoko, a daughter of Tokudaiji Sanetsune. By 1935, Tadashige was a rear admiral in the Imperial Japanese Navy.
