He was the second son of [[So Yoshiyuki|Sô Yoshiyuki]], the 8th lord of the domain. He became lord of Tsushima in [[1762]], when his uncle, [[So Yoshishige (1717-1775)|Sô Yoshishige]], retired in his favor.

The domain suffered financial difficulties during this period; beginning in [[1775]], the [[Tokugawa shogunate|shogunate]] provided Tsushima with 12,000 ''[[currency|ryô]]'' annually to help support the domain.
