Kunitsuna was the eldest son of [[Utsunomiya Hirotsuna]]. He submitted to the [[Hojo clan|Hôjô family]] but in turn gave his support to [[Toyotomi Hideyoshi]] when the latter attacked the Hôjô domain in [[1590]]. In [[1597]] he was deprived of his domain by [[Toyotomi Hideyoshi|Hideyoshi]] and was unable to regain it following the latter's death in [[1598]].
