Raphael von Koeber was a German/Russian philosopher and musician who taught at both Imperial University of Tokyo and the Tokyo Music School in the late Meiji period.
Born in Russia to German and Russian parents, he studied music at the Moscow Conservatory and philosophy at the University of Heidelberg in Germany, before relocating to Tokyo in 1893 in response to an invitation to teach philosophy and aesthetics at the Imperial University of Tokyo. He also taught music history and piano at the nearby Tokyo Music School, contributing in notable ways to both Japanese philosophy and music.
Koeber died in Yokohama in 1923 and was buried at Zôshigaya Cemetery in Tokyo.
