Katayama Hokkai was a [[Confucianism|Confucian scholar]] of the mid-[[Edo period]].

Originally from what is today [[Niigata prefecture]], Hokkai studied for a time in [[Kyoto]], and then moved to [[Osaka]]. There, he formed a poetry circle together with [[Rai Shunsui]] (a Confucian scholar from [[Hiroshima han|Hiroshima]]) and a number of others.
