Yoshii Tomozane was a prominent figure in the [[Sat-Cho Alliance|Sat-Chô Alliance]] and the ''[[sonno|sonnô]] [[joi|jôi]]'' movement to overthrow the [[Tokugawa shogunate]] in the 1860s.

Yoshii was a close friend of both [[Saigo Takamori|Saigô Takamori]] and [[Okubo Toshimichi|Ôkubo Toshimichi]] since they were young. In the 1860s, Yoshii became a central figure in the [[Seichugumi|Seichûgumi]], developed connections with [[Sakamoto Ryoma|Sakamoto Ryôma]], and participated in the [[Battle of Toba-Fushimi]].

Following the [[Meiji Restoration]], Yoshii served in a number of government positions, including as a member of the first [[Privy Council]],<ref>Takashi Fujitani, ''Splendid Monarchy'', UC Press (1998), 63-65.</ref> first Vice-Minister of the [[Imperial Household Ministry]], and president of the Nippon Railway Company.
