Sun Yi was active as a painter in [[Fuzhou]] in the late [[Ming Dynasty|Ming]] / early [[Qing Dynasty]] periods (early to mid-17th century). 

He is known to have trained a number of notable [[Ryukyu Kingdom|Ryukyuan]] painters, including [[Ishimine Denbaku]] (Hu Ziqian), [[Uehara Shinchi]] (Cha Binxin), and [[Yamaguchi Soki]] (Wu Shiqian). In addition, a number of Sun Yi's paintings are known to have made their way to Ryûkyû, and three "[[birds and flowers painting]]s" are said to have been stored or displayed within [[Shuri castle]].
