He was [[Bitchu province|Bitchu]] Matsuyama han samurai.
It's unknown when he joined [[Shinsengumi]] but his name was on the list of
[[Ikedaya Affair|Ikedaya]] bonus conferment.
While he stationed in Osaka with his brother [[Tani Mantao]],
they raided on [[Zenzaiya raid|Zenzaiya]] [[1865]].
In 1866, he was found dead near Yasaka shrine (Kyoto).
His grave is in [[Koen-ji]].
His youngest brother [[Tani Shuhei]] was adopted to [[Kondo Isami]] temporarily.
