Kashima is known as the birth place of Japanese martial arts.
Tsukahara Bokuden learned [[Kashima Chuko Ryu]] from his father,
[[Tenshin Shoden Katori Shinto ryu|Katori Shinto Ryu]] from his step-father, and created Kashima Shinto Ryu.
There are 120 techniques handed down to the present. However the famous ''Ichi no Tachi'' remains mystery.
