Kazutoyo was from [[Owari province]] and was the son of [[Yamauchi Moritoyo]]. He served [[Oda Nobunaga]] from about [[1565]] until the latter's death in [[1582]], leading troops at [[Battle of Anegawa|Anegawa]] and [[Battle of Nagashino|Nagashino]]. He transferred his loyalties to [[Toyotomi Hideyoshi]] and was awarded Nagahama in [[Omi province|Ômi province]]. Following the Odawara Campaign and the Tokugawa transfer to the Kanto in 1590, Kazutoyo received a 50,000-koku fief of Kakegawa in Tôtômi province. He sided with Tokugawa Ieyasu in the Sekigahara Campaign (1600) and assisted in the capture of Gifu Castle. He led 2,000 men in the rear guard at the Battle of Sekigahara and was afterwards given Kochi in Tosa province. A group of unruly former Chosokabe retainers resisted the Yamouchi transfer and Kazutoyo was forced to call on the assistance of Ii Naomasa to bring order to his new domain. Naomasa sent a force under Suzuki Hyôe for this purpose and by the latter half of 1601 the Yamaouchi's fief was pacified. Kazutoyo's income as lord of Tosa was around 200,000-koku.
