Tsurumi Station was one of the first train stations to operate in Japan. The first train line to operate in Japan, opened in 1872, connected Shinbashi Station and Shinagawa in Tokyo with Yokohama, via Tsurumi.
By the Taishô era, Tsurumi was known as a rather scenic area, and was home to numerous vacation residences, and the Kagetsu-en Amusement Park, said to be the greatest amusement park in the East.
