Shimazu Hisamoto was lord of [[Sadowara han]] <!--佐土原藩-->in [[Hyuga province|Hyûga province]], and served as a sort of regent watching over [[Shimazu Shigehide]], daimyô of [[Satsuma han]], until the latter was of age.
Hisamoto accompanied the young ''daimyô'' to [[Edo]] on a number of occasions, most notably in [[1764]], when Satsuma's ''[[sankin kotai|sankin kôtai]]'' mission was combined with a [[Ryukyuan embassy]] to Edo.
