The Rokkaku were descended from the [[Sasaki clan|Sasaki]] family (by whose name they are occasionally referred). They were powerful in [[Omi province|Ômi Province]] into the 16th Century and played a role in the struggles for power around [[Kyoto]] in the wake of the [[Onin War|Ônin War]]. They competed with the [[Asai clan|Asai]] and opposed [[Oda Nobunaga]] in [[1568]]. Nobunaga took [[Kannoji castle]] and by [[1570]] the Rokkaku had fallen as daimyô.
