Yoshitora was a son of [[Shimazu Sanehisa]] and succeeded his father in [[1553]]. He served [[Shimazu Takahisa]] and [[Shimazu Yoshihisa|Yoshihisa]] with distinction, in particular during the confrontation with the [[Ryuzoji clan|Ryûzôji]] at [[Battle of Okinawadate|Okinawadate]] in [[1584]]. Yoshitora was at times referred to as Sashu Yoshitora in light of his leadership of that branch of the Shimazu.
