Sôyô was the son of [[Tani Sobuko|Tani Sôbuko]] (d.[[1545]]) and was perhaps the most talented renga composer of his day. He is remembered in part for his rivalry with the famous [[Satomura Joha|Satomura Jôha]], who became the leading master of linked verse after Sôyô's death.
