C. Andrew Gerstle is the leading scholar in the English-speaking world on Japanese traditional drama. He specializes particularly in the work of [[Chikamatsu Monzaemon]] and the [[kabuki]] and [[joruri|jôruri]] (puppet theatre) traditions of [[Kamigata]] (i.e. Kyoto and Osaka).

He is Professor of Japanese Studies at the School of Oriental and African Studies, University of London.
