Tradition states that the [[Ichiden Ryu]] lineage begins with Marume Mondonosho Norikichi <ref>丸目主水正則吉.  His Zokumyo is given as Sannosuke, 三之助</ref>, a man from Usui in Joshu.  His student, Kuniie Yauemon <ref>国家弥右衛門, credited with [[Kageyama Shinto Ryu|Kageyama Shinto(?) Ryu]] (影山真刀流)</ref> taught Asayama Ichidensai Shigetatsu, founder of Asayama Ichiden Ryu.  Ichidensai then spread his tradition across the country.  However, the records for Marume are unclear.
