Fully contemporary with [[Hishikawa Moronobu]], often described as one of the "fathers" of ''ukiyo-e'', Hanbei was one of the most prolific of all ''ukiyo-e'' artists, producing several thousand illustrations for over one hundred books, including tens of books by prominent novelist [[Ihara Saikaku]].
