Yasutomi joined the Shinsengumi after the Ikedaya Affair. He became vice commander in Hakodate after Hijikata Toshizo died. He is believed to have been assassinated by Abe Juro in Edo.


He wrote a letter to Hijikata's family when Hijikata died and the letter is now displayed in the Hijikata Toshizo Museum.
