Nobunari was the eldest son of [[Wada Narishige]] (d.[[1575]]). He held [[Wada castle]] in [[Kozuke province|Kôzuke]] and at first served the [[Uesugi clan (Yamanouchi)|Yamanouchi-Uesugi]]. He became a vassal of [[Takeda Shingen]] in [[1560]] and went on to serve Shingen's son [[Takeda Katsuyori|Katsuyori]], fighting at the [[Battle of Nagashino]] in 1575 (where Nobunari's father was killed). After the fall of the [[Takeda clan|Takeda]] in [[1582]], he came under the authority of [[Oda clan|Oda]] general [[Takigawa Kazumasu]]. When Kazumasau was driven from Kôzuke by the Hôjô soon afterwards, Nobunari gave his loyalty to the latter. In [[1590]], [[Toyotomi Hideyoshi|Toyotomi Hideyoshi's]] armies invaded the Hôjô domain and Wada castle was captured. Nobunari fled and dropped out of sight.
