The Uetsuki family were middle-ranking retainers of the [[Date clan]] of [[Uwajima han|Uwajima domain]] ([[Iyo province]]). As of the 1810s, they enjoyed a [[stipend]] of 155 ''[[koku]]'', 9 ''[[Japanese Measurements|to]]'', 6 ''masu''.
They claimed descent from the [[Murakami Genji]] via the [[Akamatsu clan]] who held [[Kozuki castle|Kôzuki castle]] in [[Harima province]]. The first to settle in Iyo province was Uetsuki Shingohei, who in [[1713]] became an adopted heir of the second son of Takahashi Heishôchô, a retainer of [[Hori Naotoshi]] of Muramatsu in [[Echigo province]].
A pair of scroll paintings by 6th [[Edo period]] family head [[Uetsuki Gyokei|Uetsuki Gyôkei]] are held in the Kagoshima University Library; they depict a street procession performed by the [[1850]] [[Ryukyuan embassy to Edo]] and several related subjects.
